What can I do about cyber bullying?

There are a few things that you can do.

Talk to your kids about it.

When you take the time to discuss what cyber bullying is, it will bring awareness. Bringing up key points to your children should be specific to the way that you are comfortable with.

Below are a few things to consider asking or talking to your kids about with regards to cyber bullying.

• Do they know what it is?

There are going to be some children that have not even heard of cyber bullying. However, they may call it something else and it is important to find out if this is the case.

• Have they ever seen any form of cyber bullying?

Do not be afraid to ask this question. Chances are that at some point they have seen it. If they have been witnessed to cyber bullying, ask them where it occurred. Not only will this give you an idea where cyber bullying occurs, but it will also let you know the kind of web sites they are visiting.

• Did they ever participate in cyber bullying?

Realistically this is more common than you may think. If they do admit to participating in this kind of activity, you may want to consider discussing it with them in-depth. Nobody wants to have their child doing things like that, but if your child is willing to discuss it with you that may not necessarily be a bad thing. Taking corrective action immediately is the best way to prevent cyber bullying from occurring.

• Have they ever been the victim of cyber bullying?

This is a very important thing to bring up to your child because they may not want to talk about being bullied. Many children will go so far as to hide it from their parents because they fear they will make matter worse.

If you find out that ANY form of cyber bullying has occurred, you should talk to everyone involved. When other parents take the time to discuss it with their children too, it will greatly reduce cyber bullying from happening among that social group.
